Hospitality in the blood. History in the heart.

Because we prefer to continue tradition rather than leave it standing

With us, hosting is not a duty, but a passion – and you can feel it from the first “hello” to the last breakfast coffee.

We believe in honest encounters, small attentions with a big impact and that a smile at reception often counts for more than any star rating.

At the Post, you shouldn’t feel like a guest – but like part of the family. Whether it’s a sundowner with Barbara, a wine cellar story from Paul or an insider tip from Lisa: it’s never stiff here, but always warm.

111 years Hotel zur Post
on Lake Millstatt

A house full of history

Die „Post“ als Gasthaus und Finanzamt
1908

The story of our legendary hospitality began in 1908 – with a bold move and a really good idea: Johann Berger, Paul Kern’s great-great-grandfather, bought the country inn “zur Post”. Stables included.

What came after that? Quite a lot! In the early years, the “Post” was not only an inn, but also a post office and elementary school – a real all-rounder.

When Johann handed over the reins to his son Friedrich, the business continued together with his wife Aloisia. The two of them not only ran the inn, but also the associated farm. Aloisia was also a fantastic cook – her reputation preceded her, and so the “Post” was already a popular place to stop for a bite to eat back then.

Then came the war – a difficult time. The house quickly became the headquarters of the local tax office. But the inn? That remained.

In 1957, Elfriede Gutzelnig – Barbara Kern’s mother – took over the helm at the post office. And so began 30 really successful years! During this time, the hotel not only consolidated its good reputation, but also really turned up the heat.

Fun fact: Until the 1960s, we even had a general store in the house – totally normal back then. Elfriede and her husband Franz weren’t fans of standing still. They got down to work – and did it properly.

It was during their era that our in-house lido was built, which is still much loved today. The first rooms got private bathrooms (a real sensation!), and in the kitchen the wood-fired oven was replaced by a fully electronic system – quite advanced for the time.

The guests came in droves – and so the small country inn with a farm gradually became a real tourist business. Even a second guest house was added.

In short: Swiss Post grew – but its soul remained.

1989 - 2008

In 1989, the time had come: Barbara Kern and her husband Dr. Peter Kern took over the helm. And as you know, they didn’t stop at managing – they rolled up their sleeves and made the Hotel zur Post even more special.

During this era, the spacious children’s paradise, new suites, rooms and apartments, a modern wellness area and a light-flooded dining room were created. Even an elevator was added – so that all guests can really get everywhere.

The result? A charming, comfortable family hotel where you can feel at home at any time of year.

In 2008 there was a big celebration: 100 years of family history – with everything that goes with it. (Yes, of course there was champagne and cake – lots of cake).
